As part of the $388 billion spending bill passed by Congress last week, Representative Regula managed to include a 10-year extension for the Fee Demonstration Program among the riders.
Scott Silver, one of the biggest opponents of the program, is not happy and he's bringing out the fighting words. But as I've written here and (in more depth, here), recreational visitors to federal lands should be ecstatic. The program will continue to provide the necessary incentives to manage our national resources with an eye toward better recreational and conservation-oriented activities.
UPDATE: Both of Montana's senators are apparently unhappy with the rider, though Montana Congressman Rehburg supports it.
Sierra Club does not want user fees for hiking areas. But how are the trails to be maintained unless hikers pay for that maintenance.
I have an alternative for the Sierra Club.
I have hiked in Montana, Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona. I have yet to see a trail with a sign that said "Maintained by the Sierra Club."
Instead of spending tens of millions of dollars trying to get left-wing politicians elected, give this money to the enviroment so that trails can be maintained.
