More on Birds

Jonathan Adler's note on contraception for birds brings to mind the problem of mute swans, an invasive species doing serious harm to ecosystems such as the Chesapeake bay. Details here. Animal rights groups, however, have blocked action to control the swans - see a recent story here. One swan lover is quoted as saying ""To me, they've been here so long already — so what if they're not indigenous," she said. "You can't force them out now." " What's next - immigration amnesty for invasive species?

  1. The issue of invasive species protection has become even more absurd than the tongue-in-cheek 'amnesty' posed by Andrew--in California (surprise...) the 'fairy schrimp' is a protected specie in vernal pools--most of which were created within the last 80-100 years by construction and mining activities--not natural processes. In San Diego area--habitat is protected in the southern Bay--which didn't even exist until Army Corp. filled in the "Silver Strand"--now the invasive specie have more rights than the native ones.
